Chillaxin', a Self Portrait

I don't think this is strictly impressionist, but it's close. I was going to do something simple but, I always seem to find a way to make things hard, so I started with hard and it turned out to be easier than I thought.

This is acrylic on canvas, 18X24, This is Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, Canada, in the Bay of Fundy, known for its 60-foot high tides. The spot is known as the "Hole in the Wall."

  1. Well, impressionism it aint, but I can see you have put a lot of work into this painting..

I would have expected the water at the bottom of the rocks, arch area, to be a little darker. Maybe it is but the photo has washed it out?

What have you got in your hand?

You are improving little by little with your people painting.

I do find your legs look too skinny? and your eyes little stark. How about practicing painting eyes on w/c paper with acrylics or watercolour, or even just drawing them. Just he eye, and add all the shading et al. You will be surprised how it will help with your face painting. Draw the nose and ears and moth too. Great practice. There are some great tutorials in the Portrait Forum on WC.

There is something off with your glasses, and what happened to your teeth? :-)))) It is not really very easy to see this picture very well at such a low resolution though.. Are you going to post it on the OC forum?

I am impressed at the amount of work you have done here.

  3. Hi Bruce...

I think your painting leans more to Realism than Impressionism, mainly because of the defined elements. The painting could work better if the values were lighter in the middle ground area as it would push it further into the distance. Was it an overcast day, as I don't see the light source?

I like the transparency of the water in the foreground area. You are improving with each painting, so keep up the good work, Bruce!

  4. hi gals, deathly sick today and last few days after returning from Toronto for my check up, me and one of my little guys, he brought it home from daycare.

I have ot fix up the face as its way too dark but I love teh drama of teh rocks, dark and all. It seems we all had trouble with impressionism. We have to work on that.
