Puppy in Colored Pencil

1st or 2nd Colored Pencil I ever tried...Derwent Colorsoft on 10x14 Fabriano or something like that pastel paper. Takes a lot more patience than I thought and not as easy as pastel or even watercolor. The right eye does not have a white ring...flash from the camera I think...it is really the same color as the left eye.

  1. Aww, Linn. The puppy is so sweet. :) Yes, Colored Pencil takes a bit to get used to, and the really great cp artists I've seen take a LONG time to work on each piece, also. They use tons of really light layers to get the colors they need or want. Lots of patience. I've done a few pieces in CP, and they all took longer than graphite pieces or even the watercolor pencils took. You did a great job on this, though. :D

  3. Thanks Charity and JJ. I don't know anything about colored pencil either...kind of dove in like you would with pastel pencils. I saw the puppy in the colored pencil challenge and decided to try it. I should have used smooth paper I think instead of the textured pastel honey colored paper I had but it keeps me doing something artistic and trying new things so that is the good thing. :-)

  4. Actually, Linn, from what I understand, the more texture the better. If the paper is too smooth, you will be unable to put more color on. I'm not sure about that, but that seems to be the concensus.

  5. I don't know Charity...I will try more with different types of paper. This paper I used I even hate it for pastels...too nubby.

  6. I certainly was told, the more tooth a paper has the better the pastels will adhere.

  7. That is very true for pastel...but the sanded papers are sooo much better...like Wallis, LaCarte and Colorfix...I hate nubby paper...may have "texture" but unless you really like that sort of thing not good for pastel. I used colored pencil on this...no pastel. For pastel pencils I like the smooth side of Canson okay...but again depends on what you are drawing. I even use the smooth side of Canson sometimes for regular pastel...but this Fabriano or what ever the heck it is sucks big time.
