Birch Tree

Don't laugh, but I had an idea for a minature show. Unfortunatly I missed the deadline already, but it was a good exercise. This is acrylic on canvas, 3.5X4.5". I got it at the dollar store which came with some crummy watercolours. Knife work mostly.

  1. WOW!! If this Ree's reference for this month? or one you have made up. I LIKE it!!! There will be other shoes, you can stock pile some work, that is the way to go, don't paint for a particular show it bis too stressful. (I know) I tell myself this everytime I paint for a specific show..

  2. Yeah, but I also realize I am in a big learning curve right now so I'm just practicing right now. And I need a lot of practice.

  3. We ALL need practice, that is why we are here, to practice new things stretch ourselves, make ourselves move out of our comfort zone, and hopefully become better artists.

I love the colours and the texture you have in this work, and so tiny too. Not much bigger than an ACEO.

  4. Yup, only a half inch on each side. It was a neat challenge to do it so small and a great way to work on something else while I was taking a break from the kid pic.

  5. I must get my small canvas boards out again too, I have some 5"x7" here, and I love to let loose on them I haven't used knives for acrylic painting I must try it.

I am dragging today, I am fighting to stay awake..

  6. I know the feeling. Drink lots of hot chocolate. Knives with acrylic only work if you add a gel medium, else it doesn't work well.

  7. Oh I did not know that about gel medium. I have retarder here is all. I have had this jar for years as I rally only use water with my acrylics.

I have to go to the Art Shed today and take a pot of gesso back. There is something wrong with it, it is tacky. I will look at the gel medium while I am there, and the texture medium. I have an idea for my next turn at the challenge :D

  8. There is an extender liquid medium which is infinatly better than retarder. Retarder will lifet if you go over it with another coat of the same stuff. I threw it away one day doeing my orange lighthosue sunset I got so mad.

Anyway, a gel medium, matte, will mix with your paint to make a buttery paint to spread on with a knife.

Also thinning with water is ok, but liquid mat mediu with a bit of water really works perfectly from my little experience and from what I hear on WC.

  9. I bought a jar of Gel Medium today. I will work on Ree's birch tree this afternoon when I get home from the markets.

Thanks for telling me about it, I think this gel medium could be worked into a challenge too ;-))

  10. Hey Bruce hope you are doing OK...thinking of you...*HUGS*

This is a cool painting...it looks to me like tapestry!;) Did you use a knife or brushes? If you could add some more values it will make the tree appear more rounded IMO
    Nice work though...;)
