A Rose by any other name is still a rose, unless I paint it in acrylics on a 3X4 card. I did this to prove I could do it in impressionistic style for JJ. I failed miserably. I wanted to show you I was doing something, but I think nothing is better than bad work....hmmmm....

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou paint beautiful roses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where is it bad? Give me your critique?
Fuzzy edges, not enough petals shown, not enough gradation of colours, to name but a few of the things.
ReplyDeleteBut it's yoru fault because you made me do this when you were going on about doing thins with the impressionistic style.
hahahaha. I am glad you painted this red rose!!!! So you have all soft edges, is that not surrealism? or should I say impressionism? Seriously.
ReplyDeleteWhere do you want to show more petals?
Background colour is a bit dark. I think I would have it dark yes, using the red and green, yes, but more on the red side. Maybe it is the photo that is dark though?
That front petal takes my attention. Too much..
Add the serrations to the rose leaves..
Sure now you're being picky JJ?
ReplyDeleteCan you believe that is my first rose painting ever? I did it for you to show sorta what I meant about impressionism. If I were to do it realistically, well I wouldn't have used a tiny card first, I would have taken much longer. But I did it in 10 minutes or so.
I am honoured!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As I said in my first post, I think it is quite beautiful!! Wow in 10 minutes.
ReplyDeleteYou should paintmore roses my friend, you are onto something here.
My mind is a realism mind, I commented in realism mode. See why I have so much trouble painting surrealsim.. sigh...
My first rose was in watercolour, and I painted about 3 paintings all up. Put me off actually. I shall try again in acrylics. I would prefer to be painting in oils, but the markets don't pay me enough for my oils and they take too long to dry.
When I first started painting watercolour, they folks there had me paint florals. Heaps of them. They said that if I could learn to paint a decent floral, I would have mastered pretty near all the techniques I would need to make a very good painting, including learning my values and where to place them. They were right.
Oh and seeing as you painted this rose for me, I would be honoured if you sent it to me too!!!! I would frame it and hang it with pride in my office!
ReplyDeleteJJ, you said you have trouble with surrealism. Wrong word I think. Impressionism is much different. This is like a gesture drawing with paint, 30 or 40 times in one painting. probably less.
ReplyDeleteImpressionism gives yopu the essence of the object and lets your mind fill in the blanks. I will do a cleaner one and send it to ya.
I have writing work to do this week so I will not be around as much for a while. I have to finsh my work before my srgery and I leave on Mar 31 for Toronto and will be laid up at least for a week.
Yes you are quite right. I have not studies surrealism or Impressionism, or any of those ism's. I am a self taught artist, I didn't go to art school. I will get a book from the library and have a read of the difference.
